Everyone Loves a Good Squirrel Hunt!

Back in the day, at Michigan State, I loved myself some hot and buttery, fried squirrel, Just like Mike Huckabee! We even cooked it up the same way, in a popcorn maker, in our dorm rooms! How awesome is that! I didn't like it when fur would get caught in my teeth, but you know, college is all about having fun and killing small, helpless animals and eating them, and I learned to live a little. I did.

I sense some sarcasm there.

What's wrong with eating squirrel?

I've done it. It's delicious!

Listen, we were put on this planet for one reason and one reason only, and that reason is to eat all of the lower lifeforms on this planet.

Basically, if you're too stupid or dumb to not get killed, then it's my responsibility, as a human, to eat you.

I can safely say squirrel is something that has never crossed my lips. Rabbit? Yes. Moose? Uh-huh. Rattlesnake? Um, yeah. Frog legs? Sure.

Squirrel? Sorry...

I was so inspired by this post, I went out and did a little hunting in the convenience of my own backyard!

The best thing about squirrels is that there is an absolute overabundance of them here in Michigan, and on top of that - during the winter they get nice and fat!!!

So, after 30 minutes, I picked off a half dozen squirrels with my trusty .22 and had them cleaned and prepped an hour after that.

That's when I decided to try this delicious recipe:

* 3 tablespoons cooking oil
* 2 onions, chopped
* 3 pounds squirrel meat
* 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
* 3 garlic cloves, minced
* 4 tbsp red ground chiles
* 2 teaspoons cumin
* 1 teaspoon oregano
* 2 teaspoons salt
* 16 ounces kidney beans, soaked, rinsed and cooked
* 15 ounces chili sauce

Heat oil in a heavy 5-quart saucepan over medium heat.

Stir in onions and cook until translucent. Add meat. Break up any lumps with a fork and cook, stirring occasionally, until meat is evenly browned.

Add Worcestershire sauce and garlic and cook for 3 minutes. Stir in ground chile, cumin, oregano, and salt and cook, uncovered, for 5 minutes. Add beans and chili sauce and simmer, uncovered, for 1 hour.

Taste and adjust seasonings.

SQUIRRELS ARE DELICIOUS!!!!

3 pounds of squirrel meat? What is that, like 40 squirrels? Sick.

This time of year, that's like a dozen squirrels.

The fact that you are drowning the prep meat with :

* 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
* 3 garlic cloves, minced
* 4 tbsp red ground chiles
* 2 teaspoons cumin
* 1 teaspoon oregano
* 2 teaspoons salt
* 16 ounces kidney beans, soaked, rinsed and cooked
* 15 ounces chili sauce

says to me you could probably use any other type of meat to make this stew... (raccoon, mice, gerbils, etc...)

Can you really taste "Squirrel"?

Hey, I was just in the mood for chili, but squirrel tastes great on it's own!

Also - let it be known that this is the time of year in Michigan where the true wild game delicacy comes out. Yep, I'm talking about muskrat.

Why do people seem to have such an aversion to eating wild game?

It's better for you than the hormone-laced meat you buy from the grocery store.

The wild stuff is probably full of pesticides and farm runoff. I can't believe it is much better than domesticated meat.
