Online News Producer - The Detroit News

The Detroit News is advertising for jobs on Craigslist?
The Detroit News Online seeks an Overnight News Producer with responsibility for the homepage and non-sports sections.

You will be responsible for

* helping to develop Web extras

* translating the essence of the newspaper edition to the Web site

* watching for breaking news

* interacting with the newsroom

This job starts at 8 p.m. or 9 p.m. and involves at least one weekend night of production.
Doesn't the Detroit News have, um, a classified section for ads like this, and careerbuilder.com ( "The best Detroit jobs from The Detroit News plus job listings from career sites nationwide." [emphasis theirs])? If you needed more evidence that print media has been overrun, this is it.

Funny you mention that, because I saw that job listing on craigslist as well and considered applying for it, with the exception that I have no previous newsroom experience.

Do you have to wear pants for a job like that? Because that's what I'm looking for.

No, it's an overnight shift. Pants optional, as is bathing. It's how the Detroit papers became known for hard news.

Craigslist is taking the wood to the entire industry. Classified revenue is crucial to every paper, and these days every paper's classified business is taking a hit. Aside from newprint costs, Craigslist is one of the other biggest culprits in the difficulties print journalism faces these days.

Not that I'm saying print is dead. Ask me about it sometime ...

Craig, I just love the phrase "taking the wood." That's why I'm glad a real journalist reads this, it's very Jimmy Breslin.

"I busted out of the place in a hurry and went to a saloon and drank beer and said that for the rest of my life I'd never take a job in a place where you couldn't throw cigarette butts on the floor. I was hooked on this writing for newspapers and magazines. "
