HB Produce Thursday: Only Like the Coolest Thing EVER!
Our friend Sarah told us about the greatest thing ever,Door-to-Door Organics. Each week a wonderful selection of the most delicious organic produce is delivered right to our door. It arrives in a box with an assortment of fruits and veggies that is ever changing due to season and availability. Door-to-Door Organics uses local growers as often as possible and only sends the freshest produce they can find. I can't even begin to tell you just how delicious this stuff is. Apples are huge and crispy, the pears are so intense in flavor, it's like eating the best desert ever! We sauteed some spinach and garlic with just a bit of olive oil, some salt and pepper....oh my goodness..it was the best! I don't know exactly why organic produce seems to taste so much more flavorful, perhaps the lack of chemicals, or maybe it's the more individual attention on smaller farms, but gosh is it great.
Other than being healthy, for me one of the biggest draws of this service is that you are almost forced to use all kinds of fruits and veggies you might not otherwise buy. For example, I wouldn't normally go out and buy a bunch of zucchini, but since they came in last week's delivery, I needed to make some kind of zucchini dish. Last night I took the zucchini and some carrots, peeled them, cooked them for just a few minutes to soften and then tossed with olive oil, salt and pepper. Again, great! Since you want to get your money's worth, you try to eat everything over the week. This in turn can be great because we are eating so much more fresh produce than before and this is helping me get to my goal of eating several servings of fruits and veggies a day. It's so much healthier than snacking on junk food or over processed food. (Yes, though, I am guilty of that on a daily basis. I'm only human) In the least, it's a step in the right direction.
They way ordering works is great too. Once you sign up, you go to the section where you select your "box size". We get the "small box" which is recommended for families with one small child. You can though, get boxes ranging in size from a "bitty" box to a "Large" box. The site helps you chose what will work best for you. You can order a mixed fruit and veggie box like us, or an all fruit or all veggie box. You can also chose to receive a delivery once a week or every other. It seems to work out to be cheaper than market for all of the produce, which is great. It also saves me time from going to the market and selecting what I need, this is great when you have an antsy toddler. In addition, and my favorite part, each Sunday you are e-mailed a list of what your box will include in the coming week. If there is something you don't want or don't think you would use, you can substitute that item with any other item they carry! For example, I substituted last Weeks's kale for some grapefruit. Each week, or every other week, they automatically charge your credit card, so you don't have to worry about paying each time.
I can't say much more than it's a wonderful service!I really recommend giving it a shot. You can cancel at any time with no charge. So go check THEM out, it's only like the coolest thing EVER!
PS. I embedded the link to the Michigan branch of Door-to-Door Organics, but you can check their national site HERE to see if they also operate in your state!

That is the coolest thing ever, especially during the winter when it's hard to good looking fruits and veggies in the stores. I checked the national website and while they do not have it here in Montrose, they do have it in the Denver Metro area so maybe I'll sign up once I get back over on that side of the mountains. For now, I'll stick with the farmer's market since 90% of them are organic. I know a guy that harvests bing cheeries that are to DIE for! (Okay, maybe not as good as Traverse cheeries, but close.
AW MAN! I so want this service! WAH! None in Texas, although I'm sure it would catch on like wildfire here!
