Giant Mantis

I just got some pictures of this giant praying mantis hanging out in the shade of our door handle at the office.

Isn't he cool? He's a lot prettier than that cicada Lauren went nuts for a couple of weeks ago, although I'm sure she would beg to differ. When I went out with the camera he turned and looked at me, and then turned away when he perceived I wasn't a threat. Not the sort of recognition you expect from an insect.

While that is an AWESOME picture of your neighborhood mantis (my son is waaaaaay impressed), the link turned my stomach. I guess I really didn't know what to expect when I opened it, and by the first picture, I just found it unusual. The second picture, though, with the blood and gore was more than I needed to know. How sad for that little hummingbird, especially after the cool link you put up about hummingbirds just the other day! boo hoo!!!

(Lauren - do you think this will help???? I'm trying to sound convincing!)

I agree with you (and Lauren) that the link is disturbing. What was really interesting to me though is that even though it's upsetting, it is just unbelievable that a bug is capable of capturing a bird. It's both amazing and awful. Sorry to cause distress, I'll beef up the warning.

Bring back the link! It is nature at its rawest...
Just beef up warnings that it is not for the faint-hearted.
Don't let the omni-loving keep the rest of us from expanding our minds!
