#GrannyHair ;)

#GrannyHair

Hiya Silver Sisters! \(^-^)/
Whoa. I look kind of like an ice-princess in that picture up there, don't I? But, meh! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I need to put my best "silver fox" face forward because it's my official #GrannyHair photo!!!

Have you guys heard of this latest,  #1 Intsagram hash-tag taking the internets by storm!? It's called "#grannyhair", and although it is 1.) prone to being slightly offensive and 2.) potentially a super damaging hair look to pull off, I still think it's kind of cool!

Basically, young people are bleaching their hair and dying it GRAY!  Just tonight, while picking up our sushi from a nearby sushi shop/ Japanese market, a hipster couple walked in and the girlfriend had dyed gray hair! It was actually really funny and kind of awkward coming face-to-face with her. I don't think I was too much older, and to run into another person with dyed gray hair and me standing there with just gray hair, it was an amusing situation. I don't even know why.

At first, when I read about #grannyhair, I was like: "Hey! I'm not a granny! I don't look like a granny just because I have gray hair, do I?" But then after a few minutes, I realized that I love grannies, and they're great, and also, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! So these young people who are going gray, are doing it because they know that gray can be BEAUTIFUL, and it is!!!!
I have to admit also, as much as I lament the trend's name, the looks that some of these people are getting are GORGEOUS.

I needed to do my part juuuuuuuuust to make sure that these young whipper snappers know and see that #grannyhair can ALSO be as nice with "natural" granny hair. There wasn't much au natural representation. So, I snapped my selfie and posted it to Instagram with the hash-tag. It got a very supportive response! I'm glad people are open to the "I'm just gray" granny hair look too. :)

On a side-note, for those of you who might be wondering, from what I understand, to get the dyed granny hair look, you need to bleach, strip all of the color out of your hair and then re-dye everything gray. It is one of the most potentially damaging things you can do to your hair and from what I have read, the gray dye often fades and fades in a patchy way. There is actually way MORE time and up-keep to this style than simply covering  your naturally gray hair. So, while I'm having fun with #grannyhair, I personally urge those of you on a "gray hair journey" to not consider going bleached and dyed gray. There are more healthy, less difficult ways to grow out your hair.

Here are some links to stories on the big trend. Have fun and wear your granny hair proudly!!!!  ;)

Yes! My sister actually posted this to my facebook page, the "trend" pictures, haha! And I'm digging my granny hair...it'll be a year since stop dying it in May!! :-) :-)

I could have written this post! I had a waitress recently at a restaurant who'd dyed her hair grey and I felt, like you said, inexplicably uncomfortable. I have also had numerous people tell me about or send me #grannyhair photos or references and I feel like I need to explain how harsh it can be to your hair. No matter what, I'm having fun being "trendy" for once in my 40 years! ;-) Your photo is gorgeous!

A couple of friends posted this on my site too. I prefer to call it glitter. :) I really need to send you pics of my 98% grown out "granny hair". You were truly my inspiration. I'm putting together a post with pics soon.

I'm late in noticing your post. As someone who is half way there with growing out their hair I found the instagram photos funny. I do find that both younger women and men that are my age (mid forties) are all very supportive and love my hair. It helps during this trying time.
