Lunch, Finally

You'll recall that yesterday I was pretty pissed off by how limited my lunch options were. Today I went a bit further afield to find something good and cheap.

I have driven by Barb's Pasties and Pizza in Clawson, MI dozens of times, and I have always intended to stop. Today I went to look at a house in Royal Oak at lunch (more on that later) and Barb's is right on my way back from downtown RO. I was tracking the elusive pasty, a northern Michigan delicacy that traces its roots to miners of English descent.

Kids, this beats fast food. I paid $4.15 for a beef pasty, plus tax. Gravy (passed) is $.50 extra, and chicken is also available. This thing weighed at least half a pound, arrived warm, and was full of spicy, fragrant beef and potatoes. I am stupid for waiting so long to go get one. This is homemade fast food with real style, you just can't eat it every day if you aren't burning calories like a Cornish miner. On the other hand, I bet I could out-sit one of them any day. Bring it on!

I don't think that I've been to Barb's but I've been to another great pastie place in RO...nothing compares to that ethnic speciality! At least in my book. :)

That looks sooo good! Scott and I have been looking for good pasties...we might have to make a special trip to Barb's. Thanks for the info. :)

Lauren and I also went to Cousin Jenny's in Traverse City on the recommendation of Jane and Michael Stern (Road Food columnists for Gourmet), and it was OK. Barb's menu is much simpler (ie, two kinds) but they taste great. I don't think you'll be unhappy if you make the trip, especially if you pick up a pizza for the ride home. If you decide to go let me know so we can meet you!
