I think the vast distances between points of interest even keep people from connecting. Work friends from different burbs or dating someone from way far away are real problems here.

When I was an intern living in Royal Oak, I would complain when my far westside friends wanted to go to 5th Avenue in Novi, because we had one right in RO. On the other hand, I'm sure that the ones from downriver didn't love trekking to see me either. When my friend Josh moved to Northville, it might as well have been Iowa. It's just way far away from everything. I feel bad griping like this, but sometimes it just spills over. Do you realize that my office is 24 miles from downtown Detroit? 24 miles??? It's insanity.Jonathanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03547640380443175482noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9902677.post-40894998845947244462007-08-08T20:26:00.000-04:002007-08-08T20:26:00.000-04:00I just got back from SF a few weeks ago, and I can...I just got back from SF a few weeks ago, and I can see why you would want to live there. It's completely the opposite of life here in Michigan, I guess the closest you could compare it to is an Ann Arbor or Ferndale or Royal Oak, but on a much larger, cooler scale.

Honestly, I hate living here, but I just try to find all the cool, hip stuff to do in Detroit which kind of makes life a little easier.Jeremyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02876860243053889114noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9902677.post-85147835437479928792007-08-08T15:17:00.000-04:002007-08-08T15:17:00.000-04:00Wow, I didn't know you could do that with Google S...Wow, I didn't know you could do that with Google Street View. You just taught me something. Now, I'm going to have to look up our neighborhood here as well as one's we've lived in. Anyway, I had fun looking up and down the street that you lived on in SF, looks like a lively place. I feel the same nostalgia about Michigan sometimes, but then I get real, real quick!Laurahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15927215566474451712noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9902677.post-75562732586941663442007-08-08T12:30:00.000-04:002007-08-08T12:30:00.000-04:00Wait, was it roller skating or bowling? Roller skating, right?Jonathanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03547640380443175482noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9902677.post-36916722469634202532007-08-08T12:13:00.000-04:002007-08-08T12:13:00.000-04:00I've always felt badly about that too (especially ...I've always felt badly about that too (especially that we missed your roller skating birthday party). I think that we were just screwed up while we lived there, and that made us lousy friends in some ways.

One of the things I regret was that for all of the stuff we did, there were so many things we didn't do. I guess one of the reasons I think about our time in California a lot is that because there is a lot in our minds (I think I can speak for Lauren too on this one) that is unfinished. It's like the adventure didn't end naturally because we left so abruptly for my new job. Thanks for the kind thoughts about what we're talking about. A lot of it is pretty mundane but once in a while something interesting bubbles up.Jonathanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03547640380443175482noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9902677.post-72681264635783568872007-08-08T02:13:00.000-04:002007-08-08T02:13:00.000-04:00i love reading this entry - because it is about my...i love reading this entry - because it is about my home (sort of - i mean i live in and love the mission mission mission, but it's still sf). and also because i've always felt really sad that we didn't connect at all the whole time you guys lived out here. i'm still sad about this, but reading about where you lived and what you did makes me feel a little more connected. and this whole post feels like the start to a conversation i'd love to have with you someday in some form about a lot of things.

in the meantime, i know i owe you an email...things sort of got buried beneath other things and i started a new job (i mean, the same library system, but a new branch and a new title) and blah blah blah i will write soon. but know that i read this journal and love knowing what's going on with all of you and i look at the pictures lauren posts and love them.sharonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13310905438413460018noreply@blogger.com
