I'm so sorry, I've felt tha...Hi Rebecca!!!
I'm so sorry, I've felt that same panic too, and recently. It's such a hard thing. :(
My heart goes out to you because I know this is a emotional decision, especially because you have 3.5 years worth of effort in!
Here is my two cents - by all means, start coloring your hair again if it makes you feel more like "YOU!" As long as you don't have a hair dye allergy or something like that standing in your way, it's ok to listen to what feels right. The only other thing I would say is that before you choose to color your hair again, you might want to take a week or two to really mull the decision over. Only because while you can re-color your hair, you can't top back to natural hair quickly and easily. (I'm sure you know all of this and have already thought it over a ton!)

I was having a moment a couple of months ago where I was so tired of feeling and looking older from the gray. I almost caved and tried a new organic dye. I gave myself a few week to think about it, and after a while, I realized that the gray IS me and that I personally never wanted to go through the grow-out again, so I stayed gray!

I reminded myself and this might be the same for you, that with our gray, we usually need to pay more attention to the other components of our outside appearance, just to brighten ourselves up and help us look as youthful as we can. When you were camping with the Cub Scouts, maybe that was a time when you look much more casual and laid back than a night out. Maybe with your hair down and warm makeup and a youthful, stylish outfit, I would be you look much younger. That might be part of why the photo pulled at your heart. Maybe it wasn't an accurate representation of how you look to the world on a day to day basis?

At any rate, I'm so sorry that you are dealing with this Rebecca. I hope that no matter what you decide, you feel great and know that I'm here totally cheering you on! :)Laurenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05093968853372697053noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9902677.post-42127446213692719462017-10-25T20:46:13.601-04:002017-10-25T20:46:13.601-04:00I'm in an all out panic over my hair. Then this weekend we go camping with the cub scouts and I saw a picture of myself with my hair pulled back. I wanted to cry. I looked terrible. Old. I was horrified. I made an appointment with my hair dresser to do color this Friday and I don't want to color it but I cannot look like a grandmother to my 6 1/2 yr old son. It will only make your white/gray brighter and shinier. On blond hair, if you have some, it will take the yellow, brassy tones out of it. On my brown, it just stays the same. :)
My favorite is Joyce's Color Endure in Violet. I hope this helps, thanks for writing!!! xoxoxoxoxLaurenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05093968853372697053noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9902677.post-76897629906219383882017-09-21T05:37:30.541-04:002017-09-21T05:37:30.541-04:00Thank you for writing such a lovely blog, I really...Thank you for writing such a lovely blog, I really enjoy reading. I've just finished growing out my grey over a 12 month period, finally having a layered bob cut just to my ears to remove all the colour. I didn't realise that my yellowing ends were due to pollution etc, I thought that they were remnants of dye! I've also been "no poo" in that time (I mainly use egg yolk to wash with) but recently my hair has started to become greasy again. I'm about 50% grey, the rest of my hair is mid brown. My question is it ok to use a purple shampoo on hair that is not fully grey? I'm very tempted to try it! I've already got my next appointment booked with my same stylist, so that's when I will get a better feel for how she will be with my decision to stop the color. I think the brown color she used on me looks very close to my natural color, and if there is any reddish tint peaking through I don't think it will look that bad. Before I got my color touched up I only saw a few grey hairs, so I'm still a bit confused why she told me I have fifty percent grey. Oh well, only time will tell. But I am also looking forward to having natural hair that hasn't been through all that dye--I noticed that some sections of hair in the back are very dry and coarse. I will keep you posted on my progress. Your blog definitely made me feel better about myself. Take care! :)Dee Deenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9902677.post-54956811597193754702016-08-27T23:38:34.790-04:002016-08-27T23:38:34.790-04:00Hi Dee Dee!!! \('-')/
Welcome!
Thank you...Hi Dee Dee!!! \('-')/

Welcome!
Thank you so much for sharing with us. I'm sorry, it sounds like your hairstylist isn't on the same page as you. That can be really difficult, especially when you're trying to accomplish something not so easy, like growing out your hair. My advice would be to look for a stylist that will support and encourage you on this journey. I know it is not always easy to change to a new professional, but it can make a big difference. I'm not sure how to find pro-gray hairstylists, but asking around or calling a salon before hand might be a good start. I went cole-turkey with hair dye when I grew out my hair. It is not an easy route, but it can save your the time, money and stress on your hair instead of trying to get the red color closer to your natural color. Just a though, but you need to do what feels right for you! :)

Hang in there Dee Dee. I have no doubt that you can do it!!!! A lot of times people just need some time to come around and see that gray can be great!!!
xoxoxoxox,
LaurenLaurenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05093968853372697053noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9902677.post-19046082292397620752016-08-27T13:44:35.992-04:002016-08-27T13:44:35.992-04:00Hello Lauren! I just found your blog today while g...Hello Lauren! I just found your blog today while googling "growing out natural hair color" and such. I've been having my hair professionally colored for at least 15 years, before that, I'd been dying it myself since I was 18. I've been every shade of intense red, violet, and mahogany brown. Well just recently I decided that I want to grow out my natural hair color--why should I be ashamed of my hair color? It looks like I have a few grey hairs but I am okay with that. So while at my last visit to my hairstylist for a cut and my final color, I felt a bit weird when I left the salon. I'm very excited about growing out my natural hair, and asked what color to use today that will blend in with my natural hair. After she mentioned that it will take about 4 more times to really cancel the red and look close to my natural color, I had to stress to her that I want to grow out my natural hair color, not just get it dyed to look like my natural color. She told me before coloring it that my hair looked about 50% grey, which I thought was a bit of an odd since I only had about a half inch of natural color since my last visit. My natural color is a medium brown, and yes I noticed a little bit of hair turning grey, but I am fine with that. I just don't understand why my stylist is reacting so weird about it. She said something like "I don't think you are gonna like it." Any advice? Why should we be ashamed of our natural color? I stressed that my next visit will be just a cut, but she seems so determined that I should continue to color my hair. I really want to embrace the way I am, and if I have grey hair, then that's what is meant to be. I think your hair looks beautiful by the way. Any advice your or your followers have is much appreciated!Dee Deenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9902677.post-61814079539220058472016-03-10T18:49:16.995-05:002016-03-10T18:49:16.995-05:00My natural hair was very coarse and frizzy but my ...My natural hair was very coarse and frizzy but my beautiful grey/silver/white hair is so soft and smooth ! My hair is virgin and I only dyed it a couple of times in my life. My problem is unique to those listed...My hair is baby fine and tends to be straight-ish. I am having a lot of challenges with my hair thinning (it may be baby fine but I always had a lot of it) and I think the thinning is due to 1) medications 2) blow drying, 3) sleeping weird on the side of my head and 4) age (I'm 62). I plan on trying Ittwhivy's hair tonic recipe. It sounds like it may help and I have many essential oils so I'll use the ones for reversing thinning hair (I'll do my research beforehand). I also (remarkably), decided just yesterday to let my hair air dry. The right side of my hair seems much more damaged than the left side.Texicannahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17811749401997022100noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9902677.post-50173215317021309142015-04-10T23:34:38.640-04:002015-04-10T23:34:38.640-04:00Hiya Mary!!!! \(^-^)/

I'm so glad to hear that you love it!

Your question about purple shampoos is a great one. Are they drying to our hair? Well, I'm not a professional, but here is what I believe to be true, just like some regular shampoos are more or less drying, so are the purple ones. I think the more organic or "natural" you can go with your purple shampoos, the better. I think that sulphates are the chemicals that do the most drying.
A fellow silver sister mentioned that she likes her Joico sulfate-free violet shampoo. You might too! http://www.joico.com/products/color-endure-violet-shampoo/

I'm not sure if it is sulphate-free, but many people love Aveda's Blue Malva shampoo.

I hope this helps Mary. Please let me know if you have more questions. I feel like the benefits of occasional use of blue shampoo out weighs any drawbacks. Especially if you are using gentle, moisturizing shampoos and treatments in between! :)

Thanks again for you comment and for stopping by!
xoxoxoxLaurenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05093968853372697053noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9902677.post-17483547625667689072015-04-10T22:17:31.899-04:002015-04-10T22:17:31.899-04:00So Lauren, Great blog! I find I can wash it about once a week. (yeah, after about 5 to 6 days it needs to go up, but I can do it!) I have also tried to eliminate heat and use rollers (try going out in public with those babies--people look at you like you've grown another head!) My question, is I use a mixture of the AG silver shampoo and a very moisturizing shampoo. Do you think the blue shampoos are damaging/drying? I find going gray (and longer) hair very freeing! Love it! You keep up the good word!Marynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9902677.post-65275194975710960172015-03-20T12:56:48.044-04:002015-03-20T12:56:48.044-04:00Hi Joyeaux !!!
